Make your mouth healthy for 2019

Back to posts

Many of us will be thinking about New Year’s resolutions in this month of January and how we can take steps to improve our health. An idea for a ‘different’ (but still equally valid) New Year’s resolution is one to look after and improve our teeth and oral health. In this posting we take a look at some of the best ways you can do this to start the year as you mean to go onwards.

1) If you haven’t visited the dentist for a while then one of the best chances you can give yourself in 2019 is to book in an appointment as soon as possible. This will allow your dentist to assess where you are at with the state of your oral health and give you advice and tips for the year to ensure that you maintain standards.

2) New Year is often about changing diet for many people and the effect of teeth can come in here aswell. If you find you are traditionally eating a lot of sugar or drinking fizzy drinks then these are some of the things you can look to reduce during the year. It won’t be easy and it won’t happen overnight but all changes start with a small step.

3) Related to the above, if you smoke, then make this January the year you make the most determined effort ever to quit. We all know the damage that smoking can do to the body and health, and there are also individual effects that can be seen on oral health. If you do smoke, then quitting is probably one of the biggest challenges you face but it is the one that will pay off with the best reward!

4) You may want to consider your toothbrush and toothpaste. Do they suit your teeth and are you happy? Perhaps you haven’t got around to changing your toothbrush lately? Remember they need to be replaced every 2-3 months so January is a perfect milestone time to do this.

5) Consider your brushing technique. Many people clean their teeth but not everyone does it effectively. Read around on the subject or ask your dentist for advice. Something as simple as changing the way you brush your teeth can make a massive difference for the good.

6) Add new and beneficial steps to your cleaning routine. The New Year is the perfect time for starting something ‘new’ as the name would suggest. If you don’t already floss or use mouthwash then why not use now as a perfect step to experiment? Want that extra clean feeling after you have brushed your teeth while knowing you doing something advantageous to your oral health? Flossing and using mouthwash can bring exactly these things.

Whilst we appreciate that some of these ideas are more difficult than others if you can work on just a few in the short term then you will notice a positive difference very quickly. Why not rank this advice in order of personal difficulty for you and start with what will be easiest?
