Do I Need A Tooth Extraction?

Back to posts

Tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from the bone. Tooth pain and sensitivity is never normal and shouldn’t be ignored, oftentimes it may mean that you need to have a tooth extracted to prevent any further dental issues arising.

Whilst reputable dentists will always prioritise retaining your natural teeth where possible and resolving the issue without the need for extraction, sometimes extraction is unavoidable and is the best solution to relieve pain and dental issues.

Common reasons that teeth have to be removed are:

*The tooth is irreparable due to tooth decay/wear

*Gum disease has advanced too far and your tooth is now loose

*The tooth is broken/cracked beyond repair

*You are having dental implants

*Wisdom teeth are causing pain

*Wisdom teeth have grown in incorrectly

*The tooth is impacted

*Your mouth is crowded and the tooth needs to be removed for tooth alignment

How Do I Know I Need An Extraction?

If you suspect that you may need a tooth extraction and feel your issue is reflective of those listed above, you should visit your dentist for a full examination of your teeth so that they can diagnose any issues and recommend the best course of action.

Your dentist may be able to immediately spot the problem; however, an x-ray may be required to see a full visual of your teeth and any issues occurring below the gumline that may not be immediately apparent.

Before Your Treatment

It is important to listen to your dentist’s advice before the treatment to ensure the procedure goes smoothly. Your dentist will advise you thing such as eating, drinking and smoking as well as any health-related issues you may have that could require rescheduling the appointment.

Options For Restoring Gaps

After your tooth has been extracted, your dentist should discuss your options for restoring your missing tooth. Depending on the position of the gap, you may be happy with leaving the gap as it is if it is not visible, however, a more prominent tooth at the front of your smile may make you more self-conscious.

You have three options when it comes to restoring teeth all with differing results:

*Dental implants – a permanent tooth is implanted into the bone that will last forever

*Dentures – temporary, partial or full versions available depending on how many teeth have been extracted

*Dental bridges – a false tooth replaces the gap by being supported by surrounding teeth
