Caring for your Dental Veneers

Back to posts

With the aim to achieve a perfect smile rising dramatically in popularity over recent years, we’ve found more of us are opting for Dental Veneers than ever before. The paper-thin shells of material, affixed to the tooth’s outer-surface, do wonders to alter the shape, length, colour, and size of teeth, producing very visually appealing results. Unfortunately, we know that this cosmetic dentistry procedure doesn’t last forever, so how do we get the most out of it? What actions should be taken to ensure our Veneers stay in perfect condition for as long as possible?

  1. Practise good Oral Hygiene

The maintenance of a great dental hygiene routine can be detrimental to the up-keep of your veneers and prolonging their time in quality condition. While it may seem fairly obvious, ensuring you brush your teeth everyday can have a major impact on the life-span of your veneers and increase the timeframe in which they will need to be replaced. When brushing your teeth, using nonabrasive toothpaste as well as, preferably, an electric toothbrush is advised. This should take place at least twice each day but, if possible, you should be aiming to brush your teeth after every meal.

Flossing should also be considered of the upmost importance when trying to preserve this cosmetic dentistry procedure. Removing food stuck between teeth and protecting the overall health of your mouth by flossing at least once a day is highly recommended by a multitude of dental professionals and thus is advice that should be followed. Once again, you should be aiming to floss after every meal if this is a possibility.

  1. Protect your Smile

While engaging in physical activity is very important as part of a healthy lifestyle, contact sports, such as football, wrestling, and rugby are often where the damage or breaking of a tooth can occur. This could leave the safety of your smile severely compromised. To combat issues caused by such sports, and protect your veneers from possible trauma, it may be worth investing in a mouth guard.

Another thing to be wary of is watching what you chew. Veneers may be very durable, but you must be careful not to chip or break them by biting down on hard foods, such as raw carrots, cuts of meat containing bone, hard boiled sweets, and even objects like pens and pencils. Doing so can lengthen the life of your dental veneers dramatically, and decrease the amount of repairs that you would need to undertake.

  1. Avoid excess Alcohol

The consumption of alcoholic drinks in excess can work to soften the composites that bond the veneer to your tooth, making them more prone to staining, damage, and deterioration. Due to this, it is vital to avoid interaction with alcohol where possible as to maintain the health of your Veneers. It is also important to note that alcohol is not just found in beverages, but also various toothpaste and mouthwash brands. This could mean that, by choosing the wrong brand when aiming to care for your oral health, you could actually be doing more harm than good. Ensure that you check the ingredients of such products before making a purchase, as they can be just as damaging to your veneers as liquor.

  1. Address Bruxism

Bruxism, otherwise known as teeth grinding, can be highly destructive to the condition of your dental veneers, putting them, as well as your teeth and jaw joints, under unnecessary stress. This can cause the health of your dental veneers to decrease at a much more rapid pace than usual. If you suspect that you suffer from Bruxism, it is important to discuss this issue with your Dentist as soon as possible to manage the issue; they may suggest wearing a mouth guard while sleeping to decrease the chance of additional expenses caused by increased veneer deterioration.

Overall, there are several actions that you can take to prolong the life of your dental veneers and get the most out of this cosmetic dentistry procedure. This is a great treatment to undertake when aiming to gain the perfect smile and making it last as long as possible before needing replacing is an added bonus.
