Inlays and Onlays

Sometimes, we are unable to place fillings because the damage (or ‘holes’) caused by broken teeth or decay are too big. In addition, the ‘holes’ may not yet require a full cover crown. In this instance, we would usually recommend the use of porcelain inlays or onlays.

What is an inlay or onlay?

Porcelain inlays or porcelain onlays are larger ‘fillings’ made of porcelain that fit into or onto the tooth depending on the size required.

At Ascent Dental Care Loughborough, they are used when there is too little tooth structure to predictably support a white filling but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which can be more destructive to the tooth long-term.

Porcelain inlays/onlays are handcrafted in the laboratory by our experienced dental ceramists for a truly bespoke restoration

Porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays are extremely durable (even more-so than white fillings!) lasting up 20 years, this is because porcelain inlays/onlays are precision bonded in place, thereby increasing the structural integrity of the entire tooth.
